The Barbour brand was founded in the town of South Shields (North East England) in 1894. The founder was none other than John Barbour. Already in 1900, his son, Malcolm, joined the business and played a key role in the development of the company by introducing mailing catalogs, which allowed to sell products all over the world. In 1917, as much as 75% of the company's revenues were sales from catalogs, and the products were shipped, among others to South Africa, Chile and Asian countries.
In 1936, an avid motorcyclist, Duncan Barbour (Malcolm's only son) launched a waxed cotton suit. It was designed especially for motorcyclists racing in the International Six Day Trials. This event initiated the creation of the Barbour International sub-brand (this was also the name of the waxed coverall).
Barbour currently has stores in over 55 countries around the world (including Great Britain, the United States, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Poland and Japan). The brand produces clothes in many places around the world, but it is worth tell about the classic, waxed jackets, which are still hand made in the English factory in Simonside.
